 15 quick PMS facts

Anyone who has experienced premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or been on the receiving end, will know that it is no walk in the park. About 30% of all women suffer from this – and perhaps 'suffering' is the right word.
But what are the symptoms and the causes? And what can you do about it?
The symptoms and causes of PMS
  • The symptoms of PMS can include the following: anxiety, mood swings, depression, tearfulness , irritability, fatigue, breast tenderness, swelling and pain, weight gain, water retention, insomnia dizziness, headaches, migraine cramps, backache and cravings for certain foods.
  • These symptoms usually start 7 – 10 days before the onset of menstruation and they get worse as menstruation approaches.
  • PMS occurs most commonly in women over the age of 30.
  • The exact causes of PMS have not yet been determined, although there are many theories that have been put forward. These theories include hormonal imbalances, an imbalance in serotonin production, fatty acid metabolism disorders and nutrient deficiencies.
10 things you can do
  • Go to your doctor to check whether you are suffering from hormone (progesterone or oestrogen) deficiencies. A hormone supplement can be taken to correct this.
  • A mild diuretic can be prescribed to reduce water retention and swelling.
  • Control your stress levels. Exercise, yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises and psychotherapy can all help to control your stress levels.
  • Get sufficient, regular sleep. It helps to go to bed at the same time every evening, not to eat heavy meals late at night, or to take part in stressful interactions just before you settle in for the night.
  • A balanced diet is essential: this should contain plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, wholewheat cereals and grains, lean meat, fish, low-fat milk and dairy products and margarine or oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E.
  • Regular exercise is essential.
  • Take B-complex supplements, which contain vitamin B6, and a calcium supplement if dairy products don't often feature on your menu. Also take evening primrose oil supplements or a supplement that contains both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
  • Reduce your caffeine intake (coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks containing caffeine and sweetened cold drinks).
  • Try to stop smoking if you are a smoker.
  • Resist cravings, as eating large amounts of salty or sweet foods will make you feel even worse.

Reflect Newsletter - JUNE 2012

June Newsletter

So we are already half way through June and moving ever so quickly towards the second half of 2012…
I always think this time of year is a good time to stop and take a few moments to assess how things are going in your life.
At the beginning of the year we often set goals and have aspirations about we would like to do and achieve in the year ahead, we write them down and so often we never look at them again until we stumble on them during a computer or office clean up!
I also don’t believe that one needs to wait until the 31st of December to set new goals or adjust old ones… so this time of year is always great time to have a little meeting with yourself to check if you are on track with things, both personally and professionally!
So if you are feeling a bit frazzled and feeling like life is passing you by and you have no time to smell the roses, then it’s time to stop and take the time to assess where you are and what changes you would like to make to your life.
Remember that these changes or adjustments don’t need to be big, gigantic changes.
They can be as simple as deciding to drink more water on a daily basis or have 10minutes of soul time a day.
Remember it is the small steps that lead to BIG things!

"Today may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly
where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities
that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that
you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May

Interesting Facts About Flu.....

A Warm Hello to All of You on this Chilly Sunday Evening....

Since it is winter and there are a few Flu Bugs doing the rounds I thought I would share some interesting Flu Facts that I found in my Momentum Health Magazine....

Did you know that you can catch flu from someone who is NOT sneezing or coughing.
According to this article, adults are contagious one day before symptoms appear and up to seven days after getting sick. So with it being the season for flu, it is a good idea to ensure that you are washing your hands regularly, especially after using shared items. It is also advisable to avoid touching your hands and nose after using shared items.

Going out when it is cold and wet does not cause you to come down with the flu. One reason why people suffer more with colds and flu in winter is because people tend to spend more time indoors within close contact with others, making it a wonderful environment for the viruses to pass from one person to another.

Over the course of a year a child may get up to eight colds, while an adult may only get three of four. This is because of two things, a child's immune system is not as advanced as ours and they are also more likely to come into contact with a variety of viruses at school.

Many people think that the Flu Vaccine may give you a mild version of the Flu, but according to this article the flu injection is made up of inactive viruses which cannot make you sick. A small percentage of people may get a mild fever for eight hours to a day after the vaccination, but this is due to the immune system's response to the vaccine. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect and you could catch the flu during this window period.

Lastly, antibiotics work only against infections caused by bacteria & since both colds and flu are caused by viruses, antibiotics will have no effect.
Flu can lower your resistance to infections such as bronchitis and sinusitis, when this occurs you will find that your doctor will prescribe a antibiotic.

So on that note, I am off to take my vitamins and get my flu jab!
Have a terrific week and keep warm!

Meditation May Decrease Heart Disease in Teens

Hi there,

I found this article on the Health 24 Website, it makes for some very interesting reading....

Blessings,

Mandy

Meditation may decrease heart disease risk in teens

Regular meditation could decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in teens who are most at risk, according to Georgia Health Sciences University researchers.
In a study of 62 black teens with high blood pressure, those who meditated twice a day for 15 minutes had lower left ventricular mass, an indicator of future cardiovascular disease, than a control group, said Dr Vernon Barnes, a physiologist in the Medical College of Georgia and the Georgia Health Sciences University Institute of Public and Preventive Health.

How the study was done
Barnes, Dr Gaston Kapuku, a cardiovascular researcher in the institute, and Dr Frank Treiber, a psychologist and former GHSU Vice President for Research, co-authored the study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Half of the group was trained in transcendental meditation and asked to meditate for 15 minutes with a class and 15 minutes at home for a four-month period.
The other half was exposed to health education on how to lower blood pressure and risk for cardiovascular disease, but no meditation. Left ventricular mass was measured with two-dimensional echocardiograms before and after the study and the group that meditated showed a significant decrease.

1 in 10 teens has high blood pressure
"Increased mass of the heart muscle's left ventricle is caused by the extra workload on the heart with higher blood pressure," Barnes explained. "Some of these teens already had higher measures of left ventricular mass because of their elevated blood pressure, which they are likely to maintain into adulthood."
During meditation, which Barnes likens to a period of deep rest, the activity of the sympathetic nervous system decreases and the body releases fewer-than-normal stress hormones. "As a result, the vasculature relaxes, blood pressure drops and the heart works less," he said.
School records also showed behavioural improvements.
"Transcendental meditation results in a rest for the body that is often deeper than sleep," Barnes said. "Statistics indicate that one in every 10 black youths have high blood pressure.
If practised over time, the meditation may reduce the risk of these teens developing cardiovascular disease, in addition to other added health benefits.
