Motivational Snippets

On Thursday last week, I was lucky enough to hear Peter Van Kets give a motivational talk at the Institute of Quarrying Conference.

For those of you who do not know who Peter van Kets is...  He is one of South Africa's TRUE Adventurers! Having raced across the Atlantic Ocean (Partnered and Solo), as well as also having recently raced across the Antarctic to the South Pole, he has accomplished things that most of only dream about! So he is well worth looking up and reading about! (Web: http://petervankets.com/)

In his motivational talk, he shared a few points on things that have helped him achieve what he has with his adventures! So I thought I would share these with you & add my two cents worth too!

  1. Vision/ Dream - you have to  have a vision about what you would like to achieve. You need to know where you are going if you do not have a plan! S
  2. Surround Yourself With The Best Team -  here one needs to look at the people in their lives. One needs to surround themselves with people that add value to their lives. People who build you up. People who inspire you! Look who you are keeping company with...
  3. Be Properly Prepared - are you prepared for the task ahead?
  4. Strategy - you need to have a strategy as to how you are going to achieve your goal, but this strategy also needs to be constantly reviewed and adapted. Life happens and sometimes our strategy needs to be changed to suit the circumstance. Learn to be flexible.
  5. Don't be Overwhelmed by the Enormity of the Task/ Goal - One day at a time. Bite off small chunks at a time.
  6. Do not Be Paralysed by the Fear of Failure - you only fail if you do not try.
  7. Move From External Discipline to Self Discipline - you need to look to within yourself. You are responsible! Here Peter talks about how when he was rowing across the Atlantic by himself, he split his days into 90minute work/ rowing and 90minute rest periods. These continued through the day, night, rain and sunshine. He never missed a shift& it was this internal discipline that helped him achieve his goal. What internal discipline do you need in your day?
  8. Focus On Staying Positive
  9. Always Look For Areas To Improve Upon
  10. Understand the Benefit of Helping Others Succeed - Peter's story on this truly touched me & reminded me that success should never come at the expense of someone else. Through helping others you attain a far deeper reward - Don't lose yourself & sense of oneness on your journey through life.
  11. Things Come To End - Good or Bad, they come to an end!
  12. Have FUN! - Love what you do & make it fun!
  13. Focus On The Small Things - too many people focus on the BIG things and forget about the small things & it is through doing the small things that the big things fall into place.
These motivational tips can be applied in both your professional and personal lives! I hope that you enjoyed them & that you are able to apply some of them into your daily lives!
